Anonymous posting to Usenet groups is not as easy as merely changing the
preferences in your newsreader configuration menu.
Unless you use an anonymous remailer to post, every message you send will contain
your real name and e-mail address. Even if you plug a fake name and email address
into the values of your newsreader config menu, your posts will still carry
enough information (inserted by your server) to make it possible to trace the
message back to you. Even if an outside user can not find out your real name,
your sysadmin most certainly can.
Every post to Usenet is now archived by several indices. The more well known ones
are Alta Vista and
Google Groups (formerly DejaNews).
They allow comprehensive searches of
Usenet articles for keywords or patterns, and can even be searched by author. This makes it a
simple task to find out what someone's interests are and how often they post.
The simplest way to anonymously post to Usenet is through the use of a web-based anonymous remailer.
Web-based anonymous remailers are a way to post
to Usenet through a Mail-to-news gateway
(a mail to news gateway is basically an anonymous remailer
that posts your message to the selected news group).
This is convenient if you want to use a remailer, or
simply can't post to a particular group because it isn't carried on your news
server. In order to remain anonymous all your connections to the web should be
made through a proxy and preferably using an encrypted ssl connection.
Anonymous Web Based "Mail To News" Gateways
In order to be secure you should always use these through a
proxy web server.
